“Climate of Hate”

The shooting of those folks in Arizona is a sad day for all involved. It is an American and world tragedy. Things like that just should not happen. The victims had virtually no chance to defend themselves; the perp appears from personal accounts to be mentally ill. Mental illness is tough on everyone involved in the life of the sufferer and can be delt with by a combination of patience and persistence of the parents, desire of the sufferer and ongoing medical assistance. Lacking these, the patient is frequently out of control and innocents suffer.

It is not society’s responsibility to care for someone who doesn’t want to be cured. It is not the role of law enforcement to seek out and lock up every mentally ill person. It is not the responsibility of politicians to pass and enact laws designed to prevent mental illness from occurring, It would be the same as passing a law or regulation making cancer illegal, it would be just as ludicrous.

The daily political posturing of both parties regarding this event is disingenuous to the point of libel. Both sides seem desperate to blame the other for inciting the violence which was induced by genetic defect. Witness Paul Krugman in the New York Times

“ It’s true that the shooter in Arizona appears to have been mentally troubled. But that doesn’t mean that his act can or should be treated as an isolated event, having nothing to do with the national climate.”

Bullshit Paul, you have no way of knowing if the perp was affected at all by any type of political rhetoric, but even if he was you ain’t helping the climate of hate you denounce in your vitriolic article, you are only feeding it.

“And you could see, just by watching the crowds at McCain-Palin rallies, that it was ready to happen again. “ ……………………really?

There is very little civility being practiced by anyone any more and it is disgusting to listen to the inane chatter of closed mines, this I agree with totally.

But Jared Loughner appears to have been out of control for quite some time. The sad history of politics is that mentally ill people shoot politicians, ideology may be involved but almost always the fault lays in the mental illness not the political process. We do nothing but dishonor and marginalize the victims when we cloak political agendas with the cape of avenging angels, further falsely inciting more hatred.

I once taped a TV show with John Hinckley’s Father who had made mental illness awareness his life’s work. That seems to be an appropriate response to his son’s horrible act against Reagan. He was a very sincere man and his message was most effective. If we had more of that and less vitriol we might be more effective too.

  1. Why is it the “liberals” such as Bobby Kennedy, MLK, etc. are the ones who get shot and not the right wingers like Rush? Except for Wallace, how many right wingers have been shot?

And when GOP Presidents get shot at, such as Ford and Regan, the shooters miss…..

  2. Dunno, mental illness defies labels, and until we are able to curtail it (and that will never be I fear) we will continue to have murders and acts of criminal violence against prominent figures who, for whatever reason, become the focus of the mental illness.
